Lead Child Care Worker

JOB SUMMARY
The Child Care Worker is responsible for monitoring clients’ children from birth to 12 years old during their daily activities.  He/She shares in the responsibility for the physical welfare of these clients and monitors the interaction between parent and child during shared activities.  He/she ensures clients are where they are supposed to be at any given time.  He/She handles behavior problems appropriately as they occur.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Community Responsibilities: Participates in recreational activities with the clients.  Facilitates children’s meetings and specialized groups. On a rotating basis, checks the security of the building and accounts for the whereabouts of all children.  Assist mothers in taking children to appointments and community activities.  Refers children for counseling as needed.   Assists mothers in effective parenting by consistent limit setting and behavior modification techniques. (Quiet times, time out, privilege restriction setting and behavior modification techniques.)
• Administrative and Compliance: Handles paperwork such as log notes, progress notes and incident reports, etc.
• Role Model: Acts as a role model by following house norms, demonstrating honesty and willingness to listen to children’s issues, and taking responsibility for his/her own actions.  Models appropriate problem solving techniques for both staff and clients.
 
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  
• Performs first aid and CPR as required.
• Covers caseload of absent colleagues when necessary.
• Serves on committees as assigned.
• Works a rotating schedule as needed.
• Covers phones as needed.
• Participates in the physical upkeep of the facility.
• Helps with food preparation in the absence of the cook.
• Escorts children and mother’s on appointments as required.

 ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

• Participates in the physical upkeep of the facility.

• Transports children and mothers on appointments as required.
• Occasionally performs functions relevant to the needs of the program, its clients, or Walden House as a whole, which are outside the everyday essential functions of the job (i.e. fundraising events, facility maintenance, completions ceremonies, community spirit activities, camping, etc.)
• Speaks with the children’s Child Protective Service Worker as needed.

 EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
• Good written communication skills with proper grammar, good spelling, and legible handwriting.
• A clear understanding of and the ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
• Ability to handle a diverse population.
 
 EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED
• AA in Early Childhood Development, or 2 years related experience.
• Knowledge of the stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted.
• Basic knowledge such as substance abuse issues, mental health issues, life skills, anger management, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc.
• Computer literacy.
• Knowledge of the TC milieu, 12 step philosophy, or other approaches to recovery.
• Knowledge of conflict resolution.
• Time management skills.
• Knowledge of addiction and the addictive process.
