FOTEP TI Overnight Counselor

Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for well being of facility and all clients in facility from late night through early morning.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Safety and Security:  Takes responsibility for welfare of facility and clients by:  staying awake all night, checking security, doing hourly random head counts, standing suicide watches,  performing interventions, calling fire and emergency drills, doing room and body searches, and performing urinalyses.
Counseling and Community Responsibilities:  Holds informal counseling sessions with clients, calls house meetings for problem solving, gives clients “learning experiences:, verbal reprimands, “contracts”, and quiet times.  Communicates with primary counselors verbally and through staff log.  Processes returning AWOL clients.  Escorts clients to appointments.  Does laundry.  Wakes clients at morning. Files facility paperwork.
Administration and Compliance:  Does basic file work to support day shift.  Notifies authorities and supervisor when clients are AWOL.
Role Model:  Acts as role model by following norms, demonstrating honesty and willingness to listen to client issues, and takes responsibility for own actions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

•Performs first-aid and CPR .
•Supervises clients cooking breakfast if cook is absent.
•Works rotating schedule as needed.
•Occasionally performs functions relevant to needs of program, clients, or Agency which are outside the everyday functions of job (i.e. fundraising, maintenance, ceremonies, community activities, camping, etc.).

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
 
•Ability to stay awake all night.
•Knowledge of group process, group facilitation, and conflict resolution.
•A clear understanding of, and the ability to demonstrate, professional ethics, boundaries, and judgement.
•Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
•Time management skills.
•Ability to manage a diverse population.
•Knowledge of addiction and the addictive process.
•Good writing skills including good grammar, good spelling, and legible handwriting.
•Drug and Alcohol or related certification, from ADP and CDC recognized agency or ability to register for certification within six months and become certified within five years.

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED
 
•Drug and Alcohol or related certification.
•BA in Psychology, Sociology, or Counseling.
•Knowledge of the stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted.
•Knowledge of mental health issues.
•Specialized knowledge such as life skills, vocational training, anger management, incest, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc.
•Knowledge of gender responsive, trauma informed and other approaches to substance abuse treatment for women.
•Bilingual (particularly Spanish).
