Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for caseload of female clients through all phases of treatment.  In conjunction with specialized staff, develops a treatment plan focused on recovery from substance abuse and other issues that could prevent client from leading a clean, sober, and crime-free life (i.e. deficient life skills, poor health, educational/vocational challenges, etc.) 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Treatment Planning: In conjunction with the Clinical Assessment Team and Treatment Plan Review Team, evaluates client’s needs and develops a treatment plan.  Updates treatment plan as clients progress through phases of treatment.
Caseload Responsibilities: Holds regular individual and group counseling sessions with clients.  Encourages clients to take responsibility for their own actions by giving “learning experiences”, behavior modification regimens, enforced reflection times, and “confrontations”.  
Administration and Compliance: In accordance with guidelines established by Walden House to satisfy internal and external administrative demands and other evaluating agencies, maintains up to date, accurate paperwork on all clients.  Makes CPS reports as requested.
Community Responsibilities: Facilitates specialized groups, classes, and workshops. Takes responsibility for all clients as unforeseen situations arise. Communicates with clients’ primary counselors verbally and through the staff log.  Facilitates family treatment during weekend visitation.
Role Model: Acts as a role model by following program norms, dressing appropriately, demonstrating honesty and willingness to listen to clients’ issues, and taking responsibility for own actions.
 
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

•Covers caseload of absent colleagues when necessary.
•Serves on committees.
•Works rotating schedule on occasion.
•Performs functions relevant to needs of program, clients, or Agency outside the everyday functions of job (i.e. fundraising, maintenance, ceremonies, community activities, etc.).

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

•High School Diploma or GED; experienced substance abuse counselor
•Drug and Alcohol or related certification, from ADP and CDC recognized agency or ability to register for certification within six months and become certified within five years
•Strong reading comprehension with the ability to analyze complex information.  Good writing skills with proper grammar, good spelling, and good handwriting
•A clear understanding of and the ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment
•Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
•Time management skills
•Ability to handle a diverse population
•Knowledge of addiction and the addictive process

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED

•Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Counseling, or related field
•Knowledge of the stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted
•Specialized knowledge such as mental health issues, life skills, vocational training, anger management, incest, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc.
•Knowledge of the Gender Responsive and Trauma Informed approaches to substance abuse treatment for women
•A second language (particularly Spanish)
•Computer literate
•Familiarity with penal codes and the criminal justice system
•Knowledge of group process, group facilitation, and conflict resolution
