FOTEP Child Care Assistant

JOB SUMMARY

Primary responsibility is welfare of children of program residents. Responsible for monitoring activities of children from newborn to 12 years.  Monitors interactions between parent and child during shared activities. Implements developmentally appropriate activities in Parenting Center. Carries a caseload of women with reunification needs.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Treatment Planning: Evaluates client needs and develops treatment plan that coordinates with Agency and community resources.  Works with specialists to update plan and, finally, determine client readiness to move to next phase of treatment.
Caseload Responsibilities: Responsible for caseload of up to 15 children and their mothers. Holds individual and group counseling sessions.  Assists children to take responsibility for own actions.  Supervises family visits and is liaison between the family and therapists.  Monitors medications, money, phone calls and screens all mail and packages.
Community Responsibilities: Participates in recreational activities with clients.  Facilitates children’s meetings and specialized groups.  On a rotating basis, checks security of building and accounts for whereabouts of all children. Assist mothers in taking children to appointments and community activities. Refers children for counseling.  Teaches effective parenting through consistent limit setting and behavior modification techniques.  Ensures children are where they are scheduled to be.  Manages behavior problems as they occur.   Assist in demonstrating and teaching parenting techniques to resident parents. Administration and Compliance: In accordance with guidelines established by Walden House to satisfy internal and external administrative demands, and those of evaluating agencies, maintains accurate records on all clients. Ensures action on items in logs daily.   Fills out incident reports.
Role Model: Acts as role model by following norms, demonstrating honesty and a willingness to listen to children’s issues, and taking responsibility for own actions.  Models problem-solving techniques.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

•Performs first aid and CPR.
•Covers caseload of absent colleagues.
•Serves on committees.
•Works a rotating schedule if needed.
•Covers phones occasionally.
•Participates in the physical upkeep of facility.
•Escorts children and mothers to appointments.
•Occasionally performs functions relevant to needs of Program, clients, or Agency outside the everyday functions of job (i.e. fundraising, maintenance, ceremonies, community activities, camping, etc.).
•Speaks with the Child Protective Service personnel when required.

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

•High school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year experience working in a child care environment.
•Good writing skills with proper grammar, good spelling, and legible handwriting.
•A clear understanding of and the ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
•Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
•Computer literacy.
•Knowledge of group process and/or group facilitation skills.
•Time management skills.
•Understanding of child development.
•Ability to manage diverse populations.

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED

•Higher education in Early Childhood Development, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, or related field.
•Knowledge of severely emotionally disturbed, dual/triple diagnosed children, post traumatic stress disorder and family reunification issues.
•Knowledge of stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted.
•Specialized knowledge such as, mental health issues, life skills, anger management, incest, criminal behavior, rape crisis, grief, etc.
•Knowledge related to addiction and the addiction processes.
•A second language (particularly Spanish).
•Knowledge of child psychology.
•Knowledge of family reunification process.
